More than 40 people turned out last Thursday to speak on a state proposal to replace traffic signals with two new roundabouts at Anna’s Way and Allman Street as part of a Highway 13 reconstruction project.

State Department of Transportation officials at the meeting called traffic circles the preferred alternative at this point. Comments made during the public information meeting held at city hall ranged from strong opposition to doubts traffic circles would e safer and less confusing than traffic signals.

DOT project manager Phil Keppers said during a telephone interview Monday a follow-up informational meeting on the project planned for next October would not be held.
