Engfer, Gregg Sherwood (6 JAN 1943 - 12 JUL 2018)

Gregg Sherwood Engfer, 75, of Ogema, passed away in the early hours of July 12, 2018 at the Marshfield Medical Center in Marshfield.

A celebration of life for family and friends will be held at a later date.

Gregg was born on Jan 6, 1943 in West Allis, the only child of Melvin and Emmie (Ferentz) Engfer. As a child and young adult in the city, Gregg took every opportunity to escape to nature, often camping out and hunting squirrel in the small pockets of woods that once existed there. He spent countless hours waterskiing and fishing in Lake Okauchee. This passion for the outdoors remained strong throughout his entire life as he was an avid hunter and fisherman, catching his limit of lake trout in his new boat just weeks before his death. He had a deep connection to Lake Superior and he and his wife, Julie, spent many years as summer residents at Saxon Harbor before its destruction in 2016.

Gregg graduated college in 1965 from the University of Stevens Point with a bachelors’ degree in biology and then joined the Army Reserves where he worked as a dental assistant. He received a master’s degree in clinical social work from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor in 1972. His career took him to Ashland where he worked for the State of Wisconsin in the Ashland offices as an area social work administrator and then later worked for the Department of Corrections in Price County. He spent the last 23 years as director and psychotherapist for the Counseling and Development Center, Inc. in Phillips and was a champion for rural mental health until his death. Gregg was an active member of the Masonic Temple and supporter of Ducks Unlimited and Whitetails Unlimited.

Gregg was preceded in death by his parents; a step-mother, Dolores Engfer; and beloved dog, Molly.

Gregg is survived and missed dearly by his wife, Julie Engfer; two daughters, Nicole Brenzel (Andrew Allan) and Anna (Jared) Johnson; step-son, Tom Seidl; and four grandchildren, Auggie Brenzel, Eilee Brenzel, Jemma Johnson and Julien Johnson.

Cremation Society of Wisconsin, Altoona is assisting the family.
