Salter, Earl S. (28 MAY 1885 – 20 JUL 1969)

Masonic funeral rites for Earl Stewart Salter, 84, of rural Unity, were held Wednesday afternoon at the Lulloff Funeral Home at Colby (Clark Co., Wis.).

Mr. Salter died at his home Sunday afternoon, July 20, 1969, of an apparent heart attack.

The Rev. R. James Hagen officiated at the services Wednesday. Burial was made in the Colby Memorial Cemetery. An Eastern Star service was conducted Tuesday at 8 p.m.

Mr. Salter was born in Washington County, Wisconsin on May 28, 1885. As a young boy he lived on a farm with his parents, and in 1905 graduated from West Bend High School. After high school, he went to Nevada and Colorado to mine gold and silver.

His married too place June 18, 1913 at Milwaukee, to the former Hazel Mortimer, who preceded in in death in 1856. The couple moved to the Unity area, and he operated a farm there until his retirement in 1960.

He was a member of the Colby Chapter 204 of the F. & A.M. and the Abbotsford chapter 185 of the Order of Eastern Star. He also belonged to the Eau Claire Consistory of Scottish Rites.

Mr. Salter is survived by a son, Stewart of Unity, and two daughters, Mrs. William (Doris) Ihlenfeldt of Mount Pleasant, Illinois, and Mrs. Benjamin (Evely) Brill of Vancouver, Washington. There are 11 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Two brothers, Ray Salter of Middleton and Milo Salter of West Bend, also survive.

A daughter and a sister preceded him in death.
