Bergs, Josephine R. (Rauen) (2 MAR 1918 - 10 DEC 2018)

Josephine R. Bergs, 100, Edgar, died Monday, Dec. 10, 2018, at Aspirus Wausau Hospital.

She was born March 2, 1918, on the family farm in Edgar, daughter of the late Frank and Mary (Meyer) Rauen. On Aug. 17, 1940, she married Paul Bergs at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Poniatowski. He preceded her in death on Dec. 14, 1989.

Josephine kept busy working as a homemaker, farmer and cleaning homes for families in the area. She was a longtime member of Holy Family Catholic Church and a member of the National Catholic Society of Foresters. Among her favorite pastimes, she enjoyed crocheting, especially angels, and sold her items at many craft shows. For many years, Josephine was the caregiver for her mother-in-law, Margaret and her husband, Paul.

After she retired, she enjoyed playing cards and visiting with her many friends. Until this year, she lived independently in the house she and her husband built 78 years ago. Earlier this year, she moved into The Athenian in Athens, where she celebrated her 100th birthday, surrounded by many dear friends and relatives. The family would like to thank all the staff at The Athenian for watching over her so tenderly these past few months.

Survivors include three children, Roger (Jolene) Bergs, Edgar, Mary Jane Chaignot, Minneapolis, Minn., and Carolyn (Don) Boardman, St. Louis, Mo.; one son-in-law, Gene Vonesh, St. Francis, Minn.; ten grandchildren, Rex Bergs, Trinka (Jerry) Bankes, Christopher Vonesh, Paula Vonesh, Jennifer (Jeremy) Lake, Barton (Christi) Chapin, Charles Chapin, Benjamin Boardman, Jonathon (Nina) Boardman and Matthew Boardman; seven great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Madisyn, Sawyer, Logan, Carson, Jordyn and Allison; one sister, Dolores Mauer, Athens; one sister-in-law, Barbara Rauen, Edgar; and many nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and husband, Paul, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Kathleen Vonesh; two brothers, Elmer and Joseph Rauen; and one sister, Irene Boris.

The funeral Mass was celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2018, at Holy Family Catholic Church, Poniatowski. Rev. Thomas Huff presided. Burial was in the parish cemetery. Visitation was on Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of service at the church.

Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, Edgar, was in charge of arrangements.
