DeWayne S. Steckel, age 87, of Tony, passed away peacefully in his home on Thursday, March 21, 2019, due to complications of cancer.

DeWayne was born on Feb. 3, 1932, to Elmer and Mary Steckel, in Ladysmith. He served in the Marines in Korea from 1952-53. DeWayne married Patricia Kenyon in 1955. They enjoyed 51 years of marriage prior to Pat’s passing.

From 1955-60, DeWayne owned a gas station with his father in Minneapolis. Many Ladysmith residents will remember DeWayne and Pat as the builders and owners of Ladysmith Lanes, racquetball court and campground (1960-83). In addition to running the bowling alley, he also did painting, sand-blasting, stump grinding and owned Steckel’s Paint and Wallpaper Store in Ladysmith. DeWayne’s unique sense of humor, friendliness and kindness to everyone will be forever remembered and valued.

DeWayne served his community for 45 years as a Mason with Mystic Tie Lodge, a Shriner with Flambeau Land Shrine Club, and as a member of the Kiwanis Club. One of his fondest memories was in 2017 when he participated in the Honor Flight Program along with his granddaughter, Megan Wesolowski.

DeWayne’s favorite place was at his cabin where he enjoyed hunting and making maple syrup, a place where everyone was welcome. Many friends and family enjoyed stories, humor and endless hours of cribbage. Over the last 10 years, DeWayne’s social circle expanded to include his treasured dancing group. These friends added so much pleasure, fun and years to his life.

DeWayne and family give special thanks to his dear sister, Ellen Rohwer, for caring for him in his home the past seven months; his friend, Lila Sandve for being a great companion to him, his very good friend, Joan Fijalkiewicz for stopping by all the time and Hospice with its wonderful staff of Amy, Brooke, Jenny and Barb for their loving care.

DeWayne is survived by his children, Mark (Tricia Siverling) Steckel of Ladysmith, Paula (Andy) Johnson of Edgar, Rick (Teresa) Steckel of Ladysmith and Karen (Joe) Yturralde, of Camarillo, Calif. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and his sisters, Ellen Rohwer of Sutherland, Iowa and Mary Jane Evans of San Diego, Calif.

A visitation will be held from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 6 at Nash-Jackan Funeral Home, followed by a 4 p.m. Masonic Memorial and military honors.
