Hoel, Thomas “Tom” Edward (17 JAN 1922 - 16 MAR 2019)

Thomas “Tom” Edward Hoel, Altoona, passed away Saturday, March 16, 2019, at the age of 67, just three days short of his 68th birthday. He passed away at Sacred Heart Hospital, because of complications from terminal cancer.

Tom was born to Allen and Laura (St. Aubin) Hoel, of the township of Cleveland, March 19, 1951, in Chippewa Falls, at St. Joseph’s Hospital. He was the fourth child of Allen and Laura out of eight children. Tom attended Cornell High School, where he graduated in 1969, and went on to CVTC in Eau Claire, for an associate’s degree in accounting.

After graduation, he worked for the Heritage Credit Union in Ladysmith, TTM in Chippewa Falls, and finally, at United Healthcare in Eau Claire, where he retired in 2017. Tom enjoyed going on trips, and spending time with his family and friends. Every year, he looked forward to family get-togethers, where he could socialize with all of his family. He traveled all over and enjoyed every minute. He went overseas to South Korea, and took in the culture there while visiting with his close friend, Ryan Miescke. Tom was a caring and loving person, who enjoyed time with his children and grandchildren.

He married Patricia Christiansen, from Ellsworth, in June 1981. They had two boys, Darin and Kyle, and raised their family in Cornell, until January of 2002, when they divorced.

Tom and Pat became friends after that, and when Tom fell ill with cancer, Pat was there to talk with him and be there for him. Tom enjoyed his talks with Pat when he could and that helped him through his cancer treatments.

He is survived by his ex-wife – Patricia Christiansen, Cornell; sons Darin – (Danielle), Cornell; Kyle (Janel), Lake Hallie; daughters – Jennifer Roedger, Marshfield; and Sherry Morrow Crandell, Chesapeake, Va.; siblings – Bill (Barb) Hoel, Nashville, Tenn., Mary Hoel (Mark) Robarge, Cornell, Sue (Bruce) Hartzell, Cornell, and David Hoel, Cornell; sister-in-law – Donna Hoel, Cornell; brother-in-law – Mike Beighley, Cornell; his aunt – Ruth Ann St. Aubin, Cornell; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces; nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father – Allen Hoel; mother – Laura Hoel; brothers – Allen Hoel and Raymond Hoel; and sister – Cheryl Beighley.

Friends are invited to share their stories and memories of Tom Hoel, during a celebration of life Friday, March 29, from 3-7 p.m., at Borton-Leiser Funeral Home in Cornell.

Borton-Leiser Funeral Home & Cremation Services is in charge of arrangements.
