Cass, Eddie (1915 – 4 NOV 1975)

Eddie Cass died unexpectedly Wednesday night of an apparent heart attack in Muncie, Indiana. Mr. Cass was born in Loyal (Clark Co., Wis.) in 1915. In 1921 his family moved to Owen (Clark Co.), where he attended the Hoard Center School and was graduated from Owen High School, where he played on its first championship football team.

He received his B.A. from River Falls and His Master's Degree in Philosophy from the University of Wisconsin.

In October 1940 he married Jule Deneen of Hammond. During the war he was an O.P.A. Administrator. He pursued his interest in teaching in the Hammond and Downing schools, and later in Denver, Colorado, where he headed Western Teachers Exchange.

In 1952 he moved to Orlando, Florida, where eh engaged in business. Later he taught high school for four years. As a recipient of three N.D.E.A. awards for high school teachers, he attended Iowa University in 1965, Rutgers University in 1966, and Easter Michigan University in 1967.

In 1967 he moved to Muncie as an assistant professor of Geography at Ball State University, where he taught for seven years. In 1972, as a recipient of an Indiana Consortium on High Education award, he traveled to India for a geographical survey.

Recently he had been working on a federal government project for the City of Muncie.

Survivors include his wife, Jule Deneen Cass, Muncie, his children: Mary Cass Weingate, Muncie, Joan Cass, Alexandria, Virginia, Jane Cass, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, Ed Cass, Muncie, Barbara Cass, Muncie; his sister and her family, Mr. and Mrs. Arne Laakso, Owen, Wisconsin.

He was preceded in death by both parents.

Committal rites and burial for Eddie Cass, a former Owen resident, took place at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 8, 1975 at Riverside Cemetery, rural Withee. The Rev. James Coke of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Owen, officiated at the final rites.

Serving as pallbearers were Elton and Lorraine Fritz, Toivo Kallio, Arne Laakso, James Wingate.
