Underwood, Elaine M. (1 SEP 1925 – 29 FEB 2020)

Elaine M. Underwood, age 94, of Colby, passed away surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, Feb. 29, 2020, at Colby Retirement Community under the tender care of hospice.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 5, 2020, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Milan. Rev. Chad Schopp will preside. Interment to follow at the church cemetery. Family and friends are welcome from 9 a.m. until the time of service Thursday at the church. The Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home in Colby is entrusted with the arrangements.

Elaine was born on Sept. 1, 1925, the daughter of William and Margaret (Jakobi) Denzin in Dorchester. She attended schools in the Dorchester area. On July 8, 1944, Elaine was united in marriage to Vernon Underwood at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Milan. He preceded her in death on Nov. 18, 1999. Together they farmed in the Town of Holton until 1969.

Elaine worked at Abbyland for 12 years and Hedlers Grocery Store in Colby for 18 years. She was baptized, confirmed and married at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. She also taught Vacation Bible School, volunteered at Bethesda, sewed quilt tops and helped with tying quilts. Most importantly, she cherished her family.

Elaine is survived by her five children: Virgil (Brigitte) of Athens, Duane (Gail) of Colby, Sharon (Pat) Schraufnagel of Colby, Darrell (Laureen) of Colby and Randy (Peggy) of Manawa; 23 grandchildren and 58 great-grandchildren. She is further survived by a sister-in-law, Shirley Denzin of Stratford; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Vernon; a daughter, Connie Jane; two brothers and two sisters: Eldon Denzin, Delores Wittlinger, Evelyn Bunkelman and William Denzin, Jr.
