Arthur “Art” H. Ludwig (14 Oct 1922 – 6 Feb 2014)

Arthur “Art” H. Ludwig. 91, Medford, died on Thursday, Feb. 6 at Our House Assisted Living in Medford, where he had resided the past three years, most recently under hospice care. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Feb. 12 at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Stetsonville, with Rev. James H. Babler officiating, and full military rites performed by the Stetsonville American Legion Military Honors Team. Interment was at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery in Stetsonville. Pallbearers were Brent, Ryan, Nathan, Steve and Dan Ludwig, Chad Rothmeier and Eric Maus.
Hemer Funeral Homes of Medford and Rib Lake assisted the family with arrangements.

Arthur Ludwig was born on October 14, 1922 in the Town of Little Black to the late Louis Vincent and Bertha Marie (Peissig) Ludwig. He attended Liberty Elementary School in the Town of Little Black, Dorchester High School, was a 1940 graduate of Medford High School, and attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he played in the 2nd regimental band. He worked in Chicago, Ill., at White Oak Farms until entering the United States Army and served during World War II.

On November 23, 1946 in San Francisco, Calif., he Married Beatrice “Bea” N. Niemuth, who preceded him in death on January 21, 2013. He worked in Chicago at Cornell Farms until 1953 when they moved to a dairy farm in the Town of Deer Creek, then they purchased a dairy farm in the Town on Little Black which they operated until 1996 when they moved to Stetsonville. While farming he worked for Taylor County Highway Department and Niemuth Implement until 1984.

He was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church where he was in the choir, past council president and president of the cemetery committee, Stetsonville American Legion and Liberty school board. He enjoyed playing trumpet with area bands, playing Taps at military funerals, woodworking, singing, gardening, fishing, playing cards and sports. He sang solos at funerals and weddings, and was the BBQ chicken cook at the annual Stetsonville fireman’s picnic.

Survivors include three sons, Bruce (Jan) Ludwig of Rochester, Minn., Tim (Kris) Ludwig of Eagle River and Jeff (Cindy) Ludwig of Coon Rapids, Minn.; two sisters, Betty Fahrenbach of Rhinelander, and Marianne (Bob) Olson of Washington; a brother, Dennis (Jeanne) Ludwig of Elkhorn; 11 grandchildren, Brent (Cori) Ludwig, Sarah (Chad) Rothmeier, Allison Ludwig, Courtney (Eric) Maus, Ryan (Sara) Ludwig Nathan Ludwig, Andrea Ludwig, Steve (Ashley) Ludwig, Dan (Meri) Ludwig, Beth (fiancé Joel Thiesfeldt) Ludwig and Bekah Ludwig; and eight- greatgrandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Doug Ludwig in 1996; a daughter-in-law, Darla Ludwig in 2004; two sisters, Lucille Gruny and Ruth Riemer; and two brothers, Harold and Jim Ludwig.
