Arthur Mayer (21 Apr 1919 - 11 Oct 2007)

Arthur J. Mayer, 88, Medford, died Thursday, Oct. 11 at Clark County Health Care Center in Owen, where he had resided for the past four months. Funeral services were held at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Medford, with Father Gerard Willger and Deacon Joe Stefancin officiating. Interment was at Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery in Medford, with graveside military rites performed by the Medford Military Honors team. Pallbearers were Terry Werner, Rik Multerer, Gary Mayer, Steven Dietzman, Greg Krug and Bryon Werner.

Arthur Mayer was born April 21, 1919 at Medford to the late Henry and Ella (Viergutz) Mayer.  He attended Holy Rosary Catholic School, graduated from Medford High School in 1938 and in 1979 received a certificate from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in business and management.

On January 20, 1942 in Medford, he married Lenora Werner, who survives. He served overseas in the United States Air Force for 3 ½ years, then returned to Medford and worked as assistant manager of A & P stores for 18 years. Then he worked as a produce manager for Copps IGA until he became manager of the Medford store in 1966, retiring in1984.

He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, life member of Klossner-Dietzler VFW Post No. 5729 of Medford, Medford Knights of Columbus, and past member of Medford Kiwanis Club. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, bowling, traveling, camping and woodworking.

In addition to his wife, survivors include three daughters, Barbara (David) Shewczyk of Thorp, and Midge (George) Blennert and Dani (Dewey) Sebold, both of Medford; two sons, Tom and John (Jayne), both of Medford; two brothers, Clarence (Delores) of Tomahawk and Raymond of Mequon; a sister-in-law, Pat Mayer of New Richmond; nine grandchildren, Ryan (Renate) Blennert, Amy (Keith) Wicks, Tania (Matt) Skaletski, Derek (Jodi) Shewczyk, Courtney (Jesse) Klingbeil, Callie (Jake) Crass, Erick and Anne Mayer and Steven Voss; four great-grandchildren, Madison and Sydney Wicks, Elsa Blennert and Alex Wideman; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald and Alfred; and twin Voss grandchildren.

The family requests memorials to Holy Rosary Church and School or Alzheimer’s Assoc. of Rhinelander.
