Fish, James “J. C.” (Championship - 1985)

James “J.C.” Fish, a 1980 graduate of Granton High School, won the high jump championship Saturday while competing for River Falls at the WSUC indoor track and field meet. Fish won with a jump of 6’8”.

Fish also qualified for the national meet this May in Granville, Ohio, by going 6’ 9 1/2” at an indoor meet last week in Minneapolis. The youth had previously set a Class C state record with a jump of 6’7” in 1980.

Granton – Olson, Jill (Off to Norway - 1985)

Jill Olson, daughter of Evie Olson, Rt. 1 Chili, will participate in the FFA Work Experience Abroad program beginning in June. Future Farmers of America and rural youth organizations of other countries use this program as an international educational exchange.

With the assistance of a grant from The President’s Youth Exchange Initiative, Jill will travel to Norway. During her three month stay, she will gain agricultural and horticultural work experience.

Living and working with a Norwegian family will provide the opportunity to learn about their way of life, exchange farming ideas and aid international understanding.

Jill has been active in the Granton Future Farmers serving as a Junior Officer, working on FFA committees, and as a member of the parliamentary procedure team. Francis Steiner is the chapter advisor and vocational agriculture instructor for Jill’s group.

Schoen, Edward (Retired Chairman - 1985)

Honored for his 24 years of service on the Town of Levis Board this past week was retiring chairman Ed Schoen, received a certificate of appreciation from new chairman George Ulrich last Saturday following the town’s annual meeting. Schoen had served 12 years as a supervisor and another dozen as chairman. It was not easy to give the job up, but it was time to let someone else have a chance, Schoen said. “I sure enjoyed all the time I was on,” he said.

Coulthard, Irene (25 April 1925 – 14 April 1985)

Granton area resident, Mrs. Grant (Irene) Coulthard passed away Sunday, April 14, at the age of 59, following a lingering illness. Rev. E. J. Keller officiated at the serviced on Wednesday, April 17, at 10:00 a.m. held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Sherwood. Mrs. Coulthard was a member of the church community of St. Paul’s. Interment was at Hillside Cemetery in Marshfield. Nephews served as pallbearers.

She was born April 25, 1925, in the Town of Eaton, to Soren Korntved and Anna (Jepsen) Korntved. Following her education, she worked both at Owen, and at Normington’s, at Marshfield, until her marriage to Grant L. Coulthard, which took place April 14, 1947, in the Town of Eaton. Farming occupied their life and after moving to several locations in Wisconsin, they settled on a farm in the Town of Lynn, where they farmed for many years.

Surviving are her husband, Grant L. Coulthard; one son, Gary of Milwaukee; one sister, Mrs. Edna Perrine, Neillsville; two brothers, Andrew Korntved, Nekoosa and Peter Korntved, Marshfield; and four grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents, one sister and three brothers.

Morgenthaler, Johann J. “Hans” (15 December 1916 – 16 April 1985)

Johann J. “Hans” Morgenthaler, 68, of 215 E. 5th St., Neillsville, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, April 16. The victim of an apparent heart attack, he was dead on arrival at Neillsville Memorial Hospital.

He was born December 15, 1916, in Switzerland. Following his education, he learned carpentry and worked at that profession in his native land. In 1949, he settled in Neillsville and continued to work at his trade during his entire life.

Surviving are two sisters in Switzerland, while one sister preceded him in death.

Rev. Mark Voll officiated at the funeral service held at Gesche Funeral Home, Friday, April 19. Interment was in Neillsville City Cemetery. Pallbearers were Donald Johnson, Brad Larson, Walter Ollech, Herb Rhoades, Albert ‘Pete’ Smith, and Herman Hediger.

Pierce, Martha (16 December 1917 – 14 April 1985)

Martha (Mrs. Howard) Pierce, age 67, R. 4, Cataract, died Sunday, April 14, at the Family Heritage Nursing Home in Black River Falls, where she had been a resident since August 1982. The former Martha Trachsel was born in Humbird, on December 16, 1917, to Jacob and Rosetta (Aebersold) Trachsel. She was raised in Humbird, and attended teachers training school in Neillsville, Stevens Point and Eau Claire. Her marriage to Howard E. Pierce took place in Humbird on October 18, 1941. The couple lived in Black River Falls from 1946 until 1976, when they moved to the Cataract area.

Martha served as church secretary for the United Methodist Church in Black River Falls, and was also a past board member. Most recently she was a member of the Cataract Methodist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Howard, one son, Mark, of Cataract; three daughters, Vicci Schroeder, Appleton, Cindy Hanson, Wells, Minnesota, Peggy Konkol, Madison; three sisters, Ethel Elmer and Lil Klassy, New Glarus, and Sally Weir, Delta, Colorado. She is also survived by nine grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 17, from the Cataract Methodist Church. Revs. John Webster and Craig Hanson officiated. Private burial was in the Cataract Cemetery.

Regali, Gladys J. (17 October 1900 – 14 April 1985)

Services will be held Friday, April 19, at 10:30 a.m., for Gladys J. Regali, 84, Route 4, Box 95, Neillsville. She passed away Sunday, April 14, at Luther Hospital, Eau Claire. Visitation will be after 5 P.M., Thursday, at Schaff Funeral Home, 5920 W. Lincoln Ave., West Allis, WI. Following Friday's service at St. Jude’s Catholic Church, Wauwatosa, burial will take place at Mt. Olivet in Milwaukee.

She was born in Duluth, MN on October 17, 1900. Her husband preceded her in death.

Survivors include one son, Emil Regali, Wauwatosa; four daughters, Maxine Haro, Beverly Hills, CA, Pauline Kuchnel, Neillsville, Yvonne Kaegi, Muskego, WI, and Mary Regali, Eau Claire; 13 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

Granton FFA (Members earned Degrees - 1985)

Three members of the Granton Future Farmers have been notified by the state that they will receive the Wisconsin State Farmer Degree in June at their state convention in Green Lake. They are Tim Parker, Gary Grassman and Terry Schmitz. This is the highest degree that can be awarded by the state and only two percent of the membership is eligible.

Parker is a senior and president of the Granton FFA. He has a herd of four Holstein milk cows and tested milk three years at the school. He was a member of the state’s soil judging team that went to Oklahoma City last May. Last summer he won a scholarship to attend an FFA Leadership conference in Washington, D.C. Tim has been on the demonstration team that went to state two years in a row and is a member of the parliamentary team. Tim is a computer enthusiast.

Grassman is a senior and vice president of the Granton FFA. He raises 1,000 raspberry plants for his FFA project and works as a carpenter with his father. He also was on the state’s soils judging team and demonstration team with Parker. He is planning to attend vocational school at Wisconsin Rapids and study mechanics.

Schmitz is a senior and treasurer of the Granton FFA. He has a farming program of show barrows and dairy heifers. He was a member of the dairy judging team from Granton that placed first in the county, and he placed first in individual placings. His plans are to attend vocational school in an agri-business course.

Tim Parker and Gary Grassman, members of the Granton FFA, will appear on an Eau Claire television station this Sunday, March 31, at 2:00 p.m. to explain the Granton FFA oat and battery project on the Easter Seals telethon. Each year the Granton Chapter collects $500 from the sale of oats and batteries to help send handicapped children to Camp Wawbeek for a summer vacation.

Granton – Loyal FFA Judgers (Livestock contests - 1985)

The central Wisconsin sectional FFA livestock contests were held this past week with Granton and Loyal teams placing in the top third of the schools and making themselves eligible for the state contest to be held in Madison on April 26. The students had to judge hogs, sheep and beef.

Auburndale FFA placed first, Granton FFA second and Loyal FFA third. Eric Eibergen, Granton FFA placed third in individual placings; Grant Koski, Loyal FFA, placed fourth; and Darryl Hasz, Granton FFA, placed fifth.

Fifteen schools participated in the contest.

Greenwood-Badger Boy’s State (Staut/Rueth - 1985)

Off to Boys State are Greenwood High students Paul Staut and Tim Rueth. They will attend the conference in mid-June on the Ripon College campus. Parents of the students are Victor and Mira Staut and Leonard and Betty Rueth, all of Greenwood. Alternates are John Schultz and Dan Kitzhaber. Sponsoring the representatives is the Greenwood American legion post and the Willard-Greenwood Jaycees.
