Van Gorden, Archie H. "Red" (11 April 1903 - 8 October 1981)

NEILLSVILLE -- Services will be Saturday at the United Church of Christ for Archie H. "Red" Van Gorden, 78, Route 2, who died Thursday at Neillsville Memorial Hospital.

The Rev. Gary L. Clark, pastor will officiate and burial will be in the Neillsville Cemetery. Friends may call at Gesche Funeral Home.

Mr. Van Gorden was born April 11, 1903 in Hixton to Harry H. and Mary Ellen (McClullough) Van Gorden, and received his education at Alma Center, graduating from high school there. He worked for his father in a feed mill and general store in Alma Center. In 1929 he purchased the former Brule Feed Mill here and it became H.H. Van Gorden and Sons. He owned and operated that business until entering the Armed Forces, at which time a brother, Kenneth, became a partner and operated it during the war. In 1947 he sold the business to his sons and moved to Jupiter, Florida, where they built and operated a motel until 1958 when he retired. Winters were spent in Florida and summers in Wisconsin.

Mr. Van Gorden was active in the local National Guard and entered active service in October 1940. He served as a captain with the 32nd division, 128th infantry, in Australia and New Guinea, and was discharged in October, 1844.

He was a member of the United Church of Christ, Retired Officer Club of the 32nd Division and Haugen-Richmond No. 73 American Legion at Neillsville.

He married the former Hazel Fremstead on July 10, 1924 at Pigeon Falls and she survives.

Other survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Cyrena) Dierauer of Minneapolis; two sons, Herron "Pink" Van Gorden and Richard "Dick" Van Gorden, both of Neillsville; one brother. J. Bruce Van Gorden of Black River Falls; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, his brother, Kenneth, and two grandchildren are deceased.

Van Gorden, Archie (11 April 1903 – 8 October 1981)

The United Church of Christ in Neillsville was the site for the Saturday morning, October 10, funeral for Archie H. “Red” Van Gorden, 78, who passed away in Neillsville Memorial Hospital on October 8. The Rev. Gary Clark officiated.

Special music at the service included “The Church in the Wildwood,” “The Lord’s Prayer” and “Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee,” by Marie Stanley and Deon Spangler.

Mr. Van Gorden was buried in the Neillsville City Cemetery. Pallbearers were DeWayne Felser, Tom Flynn, George Florence, Clifford Winter, Orville Jake and Louie Zschernitz.

Attending services from out of town were Mr./Mrs. Robert Dierauer & children, Marcia Van Gorden, Carroll Kelly, Jan Kelley and Maynard and Paul Fremstad, of Minneapolis; Mr./Mrs. Glenn Fremstad, Mr./Mrs. Albert Fremstad, Heath and Melissa Fremstad, Schuyler H.
