COLBY -- Hornet Highlights, the Colby High School newspaper, received second place for general excellence at the Thursday Wisconsin Chippewa Valley School Press Association fall conference at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

The paper was judged on content and current coverage, writing and editing, editorial leadership, make-up and other general considerations. It was entered in the schools more than 500 enrollment category.

Donnita Peachy and Deb Thomas were editors of the 1980-81 paper.

An individual second place went to Esther Venzke, who competed in the Editor's Cup competition. Venzke did an interview and wrote a story under deadline.

Another area person honored was Jay O'Leary, publisher of the Abbotsford-Colby weekly newspaper, who received the Media Appreciation Award.

Colby Students attending the conference beside Venzke were Rick Clifford, Sue Ellenbecker, Kris Flink, Judy Heindl, Jerry Hoffman, Julie Meyer, Sue Rau, Jane Seidel and Dennis Wibben.

Hornet Highlights also recently earned a first class rating by the National Scholastic Press Association-Associated Collegiate Press.
