TPS Celebrates Geography Bee (25th – Mason Brady 2015)

Pictured (l-r) are Emily Oberle, runner-up and Mason Brady, Champion of the 2015 Geography Bee.

Since 1990, the Thorp School District has invited fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students to participate in classroom and school-wide Geography Bee events. Six students from throughout the years went on to become State finalists, with one returning home as the State Geography Bee runner-up.

On Wednesday, January 21, 2015, ten students from the Thorp Public School participated in the 25th anniversary of the school’s Geography Bee. Molly Brunsvold and Shawn Hughes (fifth grade); Warren Nye and Emily Oberle (sixth grade); Mason Brady, John Slagoski, and Tyler Buss (seventh grade); and Daniel Boehlke, Jazmin Winchel, and Angie Verges (eighth grade) were welcomed to the stage in the Elementary Commons. Middle school teacher Jeff Geissler – who has run the Geography Bee all 25 years – asked the participants questions about all things geography-related.

One by one, the students answered questions about U.S. states, bodies of water, mountain ranges, and questions based on the information presented on a map.

In the end, two students remained – Emily Oberle and Mason Brady. The two answered three questions- who answered the most questions correctly would take the crown. Answering two of the three questions correctly, seventh grader Mason Brady earned the chance to qualify to compete at the State Geography Bee in March by taking as additional geography exam.
