Granton Comes Out in Droves (Ham Dinner – 12 September 2020)
The inability to have a sit-down gathering did not put a halt to the Granton
Area School District Foundation putting on a fundraising event this year. The
organization put on a drive-through ham dinner Sept. 12, and at times had folks
lining up in their cars back to Main Street from the field house. When folks
drove up, there were volunteers there to greet them and to take their orders. At
times, people ordered four to five dinners, and even as many as 15 dinners at a
time. There were about 130 to 140 meals sold as of 5:30 p.m. the day of the
event, after it started at 4:30 p.m. Dinners included ham, cheesy scalloped
potatoes, beans, a dinner roll, cheese curds, milk and cake. Some items were
pre-packaged and others, like the ham and potatoes, were pre-cooked and in
warmers in the lobby of the field house. Then a group of volunteers steered a
coordinated effort into getting meals out to folks in their vehicles. It
included John Richmond signaling how many dinners per order and Abby and Nathan
Schoessow writing down the number of dinners on post It notes and attaching them
to vehicles’ side mirrors. Those a part of the effort included John and Lisa
Richmond; Omar and Sheryl Young; Dan, Courtney, Abby and Nathan Schoessow; Kevin
and Shelly Schmitz; Cheryl Steinbach; Char Johnson; Camille Genteman; and Mark
and Kelli Elmhorst. During the event, there was even some live streaming done on
Facebook by John Richmond and Courtney Schoessow as a means of promoting the
dinner to encourage people to get ham dinners.
