Frerichs, Duane R. (1 Jul 1958 – 23 Jan 2021)

On Saturday, January 23, 2021, Duane R. Frerichs, loving father and brother, passed away at age 62.

Duane was born in Italy on July 1, 1958, to Edgar and lowaine (Johnson) Frerichs. The Frerichs family traveled the country before settling in Menomonie, WI, where Duane graduated. He served for three years in the US Army before studying history at the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire where he made a group of lifelong friends and met his future wife, Lynette. They raised two daughters, Tali (Frerichs) Koenemann and Carly Frerichs.

Duane led a full life, teaching in El Salvador during the Salvadorian Civil War, traveling the US pursing his passion for hiking and rock climbing, and sharing his love of national and international travel with his daughters. Duane believed strongly that everyone should have access to resources to better their lives, live authentically, and pursue their passions. He dedicated his life to his joy of teaching and helping young adults. He taught social studies in El Paso, TX. After moving to Thorp, WI, he worked as a guidance counselor to help high school students in the Thorp and Owen-Withee school districts navigate their future lives. While in Thorp, he also assisted in the building of a climbing wall and taught rock climbing lessons. Duane touched the lives of so many and will be greatly missed. He enjoyed his last five years in retirement, relaxing in the sun and warmth in Puerto Rico.

Duane was preceded in death by his father, Edgar, and his mother, Rowaine. He is survived by his former wife, Lynette, and their two daughters, Tali and Carly, his sister, Lori, and several aunts, uncles, cousins, and a cherished grandson. Due to distance and public health concerns, no funeral will be held.

A memorial service with close friends and family may be held at a future time to be determined. In lieu of flowers or memorials, the family requests any memorial donations be made to your local food pantry or outdoors club.
