Peters, Donald E. (8 July 1896 - 19 April 1983)

NEILLSVILLE -- Donald E. Peters, 86, superintendent of schools at Neillsville for 33 years before retiring in 1962, died Tuesday at Memorial Home, where he resided the past several years.

The Gesche Funeral Home, Neillsville, is in charge of arrangements and there will be no visitation. The body will be cremated and the ashes interred in the Neillsville Cemetery.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at United Church of Christ, Neillsville. The Rev. Gary L. Clark will officiate.

He was born July 8, 1896 in Waterloo, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward A. (Bernice M. Leonardson) Peters. He attended elementary school there, and graduated in 1915 from Waterloo High School. He attended Milwaukee Normal for a year, then taught at a rural school near Lake Mills in 1916-1917, interrupting his teaching duties after a year to enlist in the U.S. Army during World War I. He served from 1918-19 in France and Germany, and was a sergeant in the Army's First Baloon Co.

He then attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and in 1922 received his bachelor's degree in philosophy, and his master's degree in 1938.

From 1922-25 he served as principal of LaFarge High School and from 1925-29 was supervising principal of West Salem High School. In 1929 he moved to Neillsville, where he was school superintendent from 1929 until he retired in 1962.

He was a member of the United Church of Christ; a member of the National Education Association, served as president in 1938 of the Northwestern Teachers Association and was a member of the Wisconsin Education Association. He served a term as president of the Neillsville Kiwanis Club in the 1930's, was a 50-year member of the Masonic Blue Lodge and was awarded a 50-year pin in 1970. The same year he also received a 50-year pin from Haugen-Richmond Post 73 of the American Legion.

He married Gertrude C. Muscheid July 25, 1922 in Rockford, Illinois. They observed their golden wedding anniversary in July 1972. She survives.

Also surviving are a son, Dr. Robert D. Peters of Neillsville, and a brother, Fay C. Peters of Fox Point. He was predeceased by a sister.

Peters, Donald (Memorial – 10 June 1983)

Memorial services for Donald Peters, will be held on Friday, June 10, from the Neillsville United Church of Christ, with Rev. Gary Clark officiating, according to Lowell Gesche of Gesche Funeral Home in Neillsville.

Mr. Peters was retired at the time of his death on April 19. He had served for a long time as administrator for the Neillsville Public Schools.
