Gonnering, Clarence (11 Jun 1905 – 03 May 1972)

Clarence Gonnering, 66, Colby, died early Wednesday morning at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield of a heart attack. Services were held Saturday morning at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Colby, with burial in Dorchester Memorial Cemetery. The Rev. Francis Rushman conducted the services.

Mr. Gonnering was born June 11, 1905 at Port Washington and received his education at the Marathon City and Dorchester Schools. After his marriage to the former Mathilda Heindl in 1940, the couple farmed in the Dorchester area until he retired in 1966. He moved to Colby in 1966, where he was employed by Johnson Silo and Lumber Company.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Church, Knights of Columbus and the Catholic Order of Foresters, and served on the Town Board at Dorchester.

Besides his wife, Mr. Gonnering is survived by five (?) children: Gerald of Dorchester, Robert, Curtiss, Denny of Colby and Mrs. Richard (Marlene) Gaffney of Wisconsin Rapids; ten grandchildren; two brothers, William of Rhinelander and John of Beloit; four sisters, Mrs. John (Annie) Fierstien, Mrs. Peter (Daisy) Fierstien, Mrs. Jack (Ester) Bauer, all of Milwaukee, and Mrs. Peter (Christine) Karlen of Marathon City.

Two brothers and a twin sister preceded him in death.

A general rosary and a combined Knights of Columbus and Catholic Order of Foresters services was held Friday night.
