Hoppa, Esther J. (20 April 1906 – 31 May 1978)

A well-known Globe area woman, Mrs. Arnold (Esther J.) Hoppa, 72, Rt. 3 Neillsville, passed away Suddenly Wednesday, May 31. She was pronounced dead on arrival at the Neillsville Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Hoppa was born on April 20, 1906, to Emil and Josephine (Zahorka) Schade in the Milan area. After receiving her early education in that area, she worked at a Milan general store until her marriage to Arnold Hoppa in Wartburg on September 4, 1929. The couple moved to the Globe area in the town of Weston the year they married where they owned and operated Hoppa’s Corner Store and Tavern for 49 years. The business operation has become a landmark since the couple developed the operation.

Surviving her are her husband, one son, David, who now operates the store and tavern, one sister, Mrs. Sylvia Austreng, Plover, one brother, Arthur Schade, Klickitat, Wa., and two grandchildren. Preceding her in death was one son, Donald in infancy.

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 3, from St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Neillsville with the Rev. Joseph Henseler officiating. Burial was made in the church cemetery with the Georgas-Gesche Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Hoppa was a member of St. Mary’s parish and the P.C.C.W.

The pallbearers were James Firnstahl, Emmanuel Firnstahl, Daniel Firnstahl, Jerome Austreng, Lester Austreng and Glenn Austreng. Singing were members of the St. Mary’s choir, accompanied by Mrs. Glenn Short.

Those attending from out of town included Mr./Mrs. Gerry Reeves, New Brighton, Mn.; Mrs. Lloyd Bunkelman, Mr./Mrs. Bernard Schreiber and Mr./Mrs. Norbert Decker, Athens; Stuart Austreng, Oh.; Mr./Mrs. Lester Austreng, Mrs. Sylvia Austreng & Darrell of Plover; Mr./Mrs. Clarence Schreiber, Mr./Mrs. Kenneth Schreiber, and Harold Reeves, of Abbotsford; Lucille Firnstahl, Pam Clark, Mr./Mrs. Daniel Firnstahl, Mr./Mrs. James Firnstahl, Mr./Mrs, Emanuel Firnstahl, Mr/Mrs. Donald Hedler, Mr./Mrs. Burdell Bruesewitz and Anna Schultz, all of Colby; Norma Jean Janick and Mr./Mrs. James Austreng, Stevens Point; Mr./Mrs. Phillip Ganser and Mr./Mrs. Jerome Austreng and Collin, Mosinee; Mr./Mrs. Glenn Austreng & Tina, Wis. Rapids; Mrs. Harry Schondelmaier, and Mrs. George Schondelmaier, Park Falls; and Violet Barcomi, Butternut.
