Konieczny, George A. Sr. (9 December 1930 – 6 August 2021) With Flag

George A. Konieczny, Sr., 90, Marshfield, passed away on Friday, August 6, 2021, at House of the Dove surrounded by his wife and family.

George was born on December 9, 1930, in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Frank A. and Sophia (Haider) Konieczny. He grew up on the family farm in Thorp, Wisconsin, graduating from Thorp High School in 1948. He was united in marriage to Joanne K. Szczech on April 14, 1951, at St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church in Thorp. George and Joanne recently celebrated 70 years of marriage.

Sgt. George Konieczny was a proud veteran of the US Army (1951-1953) and served in the Korean War. After his service in Korea, George worked for the A&P Tea Company in Milwaukee, followed by a long career as a letter carrier with the US Postal Service in Marshfield.

George was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Holy Name Society, Our Lady of Peace Parish, the D.A.V., and the V.F.W. George was the Vocation Director for the Knights of Columbus for many years. He attended the Never Forgotten Honor Flight in May of 2013. George was known for his great gardening skills, love of deer hunting, cribbage playing, 3-beer chicken, and devotion to his family. George was an avid fan of the Columbus Dons, Brewers and Packers.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Joanne, along with their 5 children: Leon (Tom Abbott) of Sanford, Florida, Jean (Perry) Heideman of Milwaukee, George E. (Cindy) of Chili, and Mary (Dan) Williams and Donna (Tom) Hayes of Marshfield. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren: Joe (Jen) Konieczny, Jake (Heather) Konieczny, Justin (Adrienne) Heideman, Rachel (Tony) Karlin, Caitlin Heideman, Kali (Mike) Ditolla, Alexis (Eric) Harris, Kyle Williams, Kirsten (Jake) Bucki, Sean (Ashley) Hayes, and 18 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Tom, Leon, Frank, and Stanley, and by sisters Margaret and Agnes.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 16, 2021, at Rembs Funeral Home in Marshfield with Rev. Douglas Robertson officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 15, and from 10:00 a.m. until service time on Monday, all at the funeral home. The use of masks is appreciated. Military rites will be performed following the service at the funeral home by American Legion Post 54, Marshfield.

The family of George A. Konieczny would like to thank the staff at both the Marshfield Medical Center and the House of the Dove for their compassionate care during George’s illness.

Memorials may be given in George’s name to Columbus Catholic Schools or the Never Forgotten Honor Flight.
