Moennig, Herold (7 February 1923 – 23 September 1979)

A well-known Neillsville and Washburn area man, Herold M. Moennig, 56, passed away in his Rt. 1 Neillsville, home on Sunday morning. Mr. Moennig, who had been in failing health for some time, operated the Washborn Station-Store from 1972 until retiring due to health.

Moennig was born on February 7, 1923, in Chicago to Max and Marie (Proxmeier) Moennig. At the age of nine, he moved with his parents to Morton Grove, Ill., and later attended high school and Northwestern Lutheran in Watertown.

On October 17, 1942, he married LaVerne Schuler in Morton Grove ceremonies. Five months later, he entered the U.S. Army, serving in Europe and receiving the Purple Heart and other decorations. After his discharge in November 1945, he returned to Morton Grove where he was self-employed for several years. He later worked as a clerk in various hardware stores. In 1972, the family moved to the Neillsville area. He was a member of St. John’s congregation and the National Rifle Association.

Funeral services were to be held today, Thursday, September 27, from St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Neillsville with the Rev. Norman W. Lindloff officiating. Following the 1:30 p.m. church service, burial was slated to be in the Neillsville City Cemetery. The Gesche Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
