Carter, Bernice R. (17 January 1898 - 27 January 1980)

A former Shortville area woman, Bernice R. Carter, 82, was buried Wednesday afternoon, January 30, following funeral services from the Gesche Funeral Home in Neillsville. Mrs. Carter of 305 West Fourteenth St., Neillsville, passed away in Neillsville Memorial Hospital on January 27 following a long illness. She was 82. The services were officiated by the Rev. William Noble of the Neillsville United Methodist Church. Burial was made in the Neillsville City Cemetery.

The deceased is survived by two brothers, Harold and Leslie Irish, both of Neillsville. Preceding her in death was her husband in 1969, two bothers and one sister in infancy.

She was born on January 17, 1898, in Neillsville to Clarence and Mary (Short) Irish. As a young child, she moved with her family to Rochester, Minn., where she received her education. She worked in that area, returning to Neillsville where she married Hubert Carter on October 23, 1920. The couple lived in the Shortville area for a short time and then moved to La Crosse where they operated a foster home for girls for eleven years. The couple returned to Neillsville in 1973 to retire.
