Stuve, Howell Archie (22 September 1890 – 2 May 1980)

A former Humbird bank, clerk and mail carrier, Howell Archie Stuve, passed away May 2 in his Owen home. Stuve was born on September 22, 1890, in Clarks Fork, Idaho. He grew up in Harrison, Idaho, where his father and uncles operated a shingle mill. When that operation was sold the family moved to Humbird where his mother owned a farm.

Stuve graduated from Humbird High School and then taught school in Taylor. In 1915, he married Mabel Stallard, a Humbird classmate. He was then employed as a teller and later assistant cashier for the Humbird State Bank for many years. Stuve was also one of Humbird’s two rural mail carriers, working from shortly after World War I until the fall of 1940. It was then that a rural carrier retired in the Owen area and Stuve was asked to take his place. He did and remained an Owen resident until his death.

Surviving him are three sons, Gordon of N. M., Dwight of Wis. Rapids and Paul of St. Paul, Mn., and six daughters, Mrs. Neil (Phyllis) Green of Curtiss, Mrs. Henry (Dorothy) Kostlevy of Loyal, Mrs. Jay (Virginia) Bonnet of Wa., Mrs. Robert (Janet) Anderson, and Mrs. Karl (Mary) Harms, both of S.D., and Gwendolyn of Wisconsin. He was preceded in death by his wife and one son, a U.S. Navy man killed in World War II.

Funeral services for Stuve, 90, were held this past Tuesday, May 6, from the Alliance Church in Owen with burial being made in the Town of Mentor Cemetery near Humbird. Graveside services were also slated for there.
