NHS Class of 1925 (55 Years - 1980)
The Scopes-Monkey trial was just about to occur in Dayton, Tennessee, when the
Neillsville High School Class of 1925 graduated. Those seniors later read about
the courtroom exploits of William Jennings Bryan and Charles Darrow as they
argued the pros and cons of teaching evolution in the schools.
Since that time, Bryan and Darrow have passed from the scene but many of that
class of ’25 returned to Neillsville this past Saturday evening for their 55th
reunion. A total of 36, including spouses, friend and a former principal, attend
ed the evening event held at the Arbutus Café.
Calvin Mills, Neillsville, presided at the meeting and Helen (Stacy) Stephens
led the group in prayer. Marie (Woelffer) Covell read letters from classmates
who were unable to attend.
Special guest for the evening was retired Professor William Hansen, who served
as principal for the class.
The group agreed to have another reunion picnic in Schuster Park on July 12 of
next year.
Attending the reunion were Mr./Mrs. George (Virginia Gallagher) Bramble,
Janesville; Mr./Mrs. Harley V. Christiansen, Marshfield; Mr./Mrs. Harry Frantz,
Hudson; Mr./Mrs. Harry (Sadie Cole) Hauge, Mosinee; Mr./Mrs. Len (Elva Garbush)
Smiley, Ontario, Ca.; Helen (Stacey) Stephens, Mr./Mrs. C. J. (Eva Ormond) Vale,
Cottage Grove.
Attending from the Neillsville area were Marie (Woelffer) Covell, Mr./Mrs.
William Hrasky, Mr./Mrs. John Mattson, Mr./Mrs. Calvin Mills, Mr./Mrs. Fred
Wall, Mr./Mrs. Jim (Merrille Winters) Vincent, Oscar Gluck, Mr./Mrs. Leo (Clara
Poppe) Hemp; Mr./Mrs. Jacob Hoesly, and Mrs. Olivia (Morse) Ruchaber.
Joining them were Prof. and Mrs. William Hansen and their daughter, Helen, of
Stevens Point.
Letters were read from Ethel (Reineke) Barnes, Fairchild; Elizabeth (Carl) Borde,
Edgerton; Mrs. Ernest Reichert, West Allis; Doris (Davis) Schwanebeck,
Pittsville; Vivian (Linster) Schierholz, Portland, Or.; Mr./Mrs. Francis
Schweinler, Sun Prairie; Ernest J. Skroch, Sacramento, Ca.; Aline Tompkins,
Winona, Mn.; Loretta (Wetzel) Weaver, Edwardsville, Il., and Carl May, Sun City
West, Az.
Listed among those who have died since the last reunion, held in 1975, were
Harold Dean, Edward Horswill, Ernie Reichert, Orley Riplinger, Robert Rush,
Angeline (Miller) Smale, Russel Topdahl and Hazel (Helwig) Wagner. Other
deceased members of the class are Helen (Wegner) Elmhorst, George Farning, Helen
(Farning) Gehrke, Erna Glasow, George Pflughoeft, Elmer Robinson, William
Tragsdorf, Gladys Wagner and Victor Waterman.
