Miss Gehrke’s morning Kindergarten class had a boa constrictor snake visit them
in their class Wednesday, March 29, 1978. The snake was brought in by Mrs.
Kenneth (Carol) Klafke of Route 1, Owen. Her daughter Karen is in the
kindergarten class. The boa constrictor, when taken from a cloth bag, wrapped
itself around Mrs. Klafke’s arm. She explained to the class that the boa does
not bit or sting, but squeezes their prey to death before eating it. This one
was a female snake belonging to her brother, Joseph De Groat of Abbotsford, and
is about 6 or 7 years old.
The boa came from South America and if one would want to purchase one, the cost
would be about $200 or $250 in a pet shop.
The five foot long snake has a forked tongue, which goes in and out continually
as that tis how she smell her prey. She will only eat mice, rats, little
rabbits, which she kill be squeezing them and then swallows. Boas can eat one
third their weight daily and this one weighed twenty pounds.
