Farning, Frank (22 FEB 1862 -31 MAR 1902)

Monday morning the people of Neillsville, Clark County were startled by the news that Frank Farning had met a shocking death at Merrillan, while attempting to board a fast moving train. He had taken the early train from Neillsville to go to Tioga to look after his logging business. The limited through passenger which runs past Merrillan without stopping was late and as it came in Mr. Farming, supposing it was the train he should go on ran to catch it. The vestibules were closed and locked and the train moving rapidly. He was thrown down and drawn under the train and literally ground to pieces, several cars passing over him. The remains were taken in charge by the village authorities and an inquest held, resulting in a verdict of accidental death. Monday evening the body was brought home to Neillsville.

Mr. Farning was born at the old Farning home in the town of Grant, Feb. 22, 1862. Is early life was spent on the farm and in lumbering, the occupation of any Clark County young men of that day. For some time he was employed in the O'Neill House. A few years ago he sold the farm and moved into the city, where he has since resided. Frank Farning was an honorable, honest, kind-hearted man. He had no enemies, and deserved none, and his untimely death is sincerely mourned by a host of friends. He leaves a wife and two small children, who have the sympathy of all. At the time of the accident Mrs. Farning was absent, visiting relatives at Monroe, Wis. The funeral will be held this morning (Thursday) at the Catholic Church.
