Canon, James K. (15 OCT 1845 – 5 MAY 1908)

James K. Canon died at his home in this city (Neillsville, Clark County) Tuesday forenoon, May 5, 1908, the immediate cause of his death being cancer of the bowels. His death takes from Neillsville one of its most useful citizens. He was a man of rare mechanical skill, amounting almost to genius, which he turned to use in many ways, and which with his honesty and trustworthiness made him for many years a valuable man to the community. For several years past he had charge of the pumping station and water system of the city, to which he devoted his energies with conscientious care. As a citizen he was respected for outspoken and candid support of anything he deemed just and right. He met the physical and financial misfortunes of life with brave fortitude and an undaunted spirit. He was withal a man of natural refinement of character, and in its true sense a gentleman.

He was born in New York State, Oct. 15, 1845. After residing for a short time in Waushara Co. and other places in Wisconsin he came to Clark County in 1871, and engaged in the lumber and saw mill business in the town of Washburn for some time.

He leaves surviving, one son, Deatz, who lives in the state of Washington, two daughters, Mable and Lida Canon at home; also one sister, Mrs. Herman Schuster and four brothers, John R. J.F., R.S. and W.H. Canon.

The funeral will be held Sunday forenoon at the home, awaiting the arrival of the son from the west.
