Source: CLARK COUNTY REPUBLICAN & PRESS (Neillsville, Wis.) 04/29/1909 Broiant, Joseph (? – 26 APR 1909) Joseph Broiant, the one armed soldier, died Monday night at the home of Mike Conlan, where he was taken that day by Capt. J.W. Tolford of the Soldiers’ County Relief Commission. He ate a hearty supper and went to bed and was taken in the night with heart trouble, dying before the doctor could get there. Deceased was of Spanish parentage and was born in Cuba. He came to the United States and served in the Civil War, losing an arm at the battle of Antietam. He came here (Clark County) nearly three years ago with a man named Harris, who stated a small store on the North Side. Broiant brought with him his three little children. Shortly after coming here, Mr. and Mrs. C.B. Dresden adopted the youngest, a beautiful little girl and are bringing her up nicely. The two other children were kept by the father, sharing his fortunes and misfortunes. It is hoped that homes can be found her for them. Their mother, who is dead, was a member of the Methodist Church and had given the little ones a start in religious training. Deceased had only a few cents in his possession when he died. The County Relief Commission took charge of the burial Wednesday, a grave in the Soldier’s lot in the cemetery being set apart for him. The funeral was held at the M.E. Church, Rev. W.P. Burrows officiating. |
