(4 MAR 1874 – 24 MAY 1937) Hixon Moses Mead died Monday May 24, 1937 at 6:15 a.m. at his home in Thorp, Clark County, from an attack of Acute Myocarditis. Mr. Mead was born in Longwood, Wis., March 4, 1874. He attended school at Longwood and Neillsville and taught country schools for eight years. In 1898 he joined the Marshfield Regiment Band and served in the Spanish-American War. On June 26, 1901 Mr. Mead married Edna Bowen, to this union six children were born. They moved to Thorp on Dec. 4, 1909, where Mr. Mead accepted a position as a mail clerk. In 1911 he accepted a position as mail carrier on Route 3 out of Thorp. This position he held until 1919. He taught music and band for several years, and was an active member of the I.O.O.F. Forest Green Lodge No. 321. Surviving him are his wife and six children, Russell of Greenwood; Mary (Mrs. Steve Kettner) Rhinelander, Wis.; Donald of Rerie, Idaho; Maurice of Thorp; Virginia (Mrs. Eldred Winger) of Lublin; June (Mrs. Phillip Welton) Duluth, Minn.; and fifteen grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Herman Tiedeman of Thorp, and two brothers, Fred of Sturgeon Valley, Saskatchewan, Canada; Byron of Wenatchee, Wash. The funeral was conducted at Thorp, Wednesday afternoon, May 26 at 2:00 o’clock at the Bogumill Funeral Home by the Odd Fellow Lodge. The body was laid to rest in the Thorp Cemetery. |
