Obit: Ferguson, James W. (1846 – 1914)
Surnames: FERGUSON PALMER JACK Source: CLARK COUNTY REPUBLICAN & PRESS (Neillsville, Wis.) 09/10/1914 Ferguson, James W. (16 AUG 1846 – 28 AUG 1914) Through the columns of the Wenatchee, Wash. Daily World of Aug. 29, sent to J. R. Sturdevant come the news of the death of J.W. Ferguson, for many years a resident of Neillsville, Clark County. Mr. Ferguson was born in Erie, Pa., Aug. 16, 1846. He came to Neillsville in 1854 and lived here many years. When only 15 years of age he enlisted in Co. I. 14th Wis. Infantry and served all through the war, seeing much active service. He was in the battles of Shiloh, Corinth and Vicksburg, and later was in the Red River Expedition and the Missouri campaign, being through the entire movement recently outlined in these columns by the published diary of Robert McCalvey, who was in the same regiment. Mr. Ferguson was married in Neillsville to Miss Amelia Palmer, who survives him. He leaves also a daughter, Mrs. Clara Jack and a son, J.E. Ferguson, both living in Wenatchee. During his residence here Mr. Ferguson was post master for twelve years. He took an active part in Republican politics and was a prominent Mason, Odd Fellow and G.A.R. member. He engaged in several enterprises after going to Washington, and in 1892 settled at Wenatchee and went into the sheet metal business, retiring about two years ago. He was at one time mayor of Wenatchee and took a prominent part in the city’s public life for many years. Mr. Ferguson has many old friends left here who will grieve to learn of his death. |
