Obit: Birge, George H. (1851 - 1924)
Surnames: BIRGE LEE MACK GIFFORD FOWLER KINGMAN COWLES Source: HUMBIRD ENTERPRISE (Humbird, Clark County, Wis.) 12/20/1924 Birge, George H. (23 AUG 1851 - 15 DEC 1924) George Henry Birge was born near Whitewater, Wis., Aug. 23, 1851, and died at Eau Claire, Dec. 15, 1924, after much suffering with cancer. He was the son of Francis and Mary Birge. Of his seven sisters and one brother, only three sisters survive him; Mrs. Lenore Lee of Eau Claire, Mrs. Minerva Mack of Kenka Park, N.Y., and Mrs. Olive Gifford of Omaha, Neb. When a young man he moved to this community (Humbird, Clark County, Wis.), and on July 4, 1883, he was united in marriage to Frances O. Fowler of this village. They began housekeeping on a farm south of Humbird, and theirs was a very happy home for nearly twelve years, when his wife died. To this union were born five children, two of whom died in infancy. Those who live to mourn his death are two daughters and one son, Mrs. Elsie Kingman of Clearwater Lake, Elvie Birge of Oxford, and Mrs. Mary Cowles of Belmont, Calif., and eight grandchildren. He was a faithful member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Clearwater Lake, where he made his home most of the time for the past eighteen years. He had a strong faith in God and throughout his life lived near to his Savior. During his last illness he bore the pain patiently and bravely, always being hopeful that he would recover. Many of the older settlers of this community will remember Mr. Birge as a faithful friend and kind neighbor, and join with the sorrowing family to mourn his death. The funeral services were held in the Methodist Church of this place Wednesday afternoon, Elder P. M. Hanson of Chippewa Falls, officiating. He was laid to rest beside his wife in the Houghtonburg Cemetery. Those from away who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Martin Lee of Eau Claire, Mr. and Mrs. Elvie Birge and family of Oxford, and Mrs. John Kingman and son of Clearwater Lake. |
