Griffith, Amelia (28 MAY 1849 - 16 APR 1922)

Mrs. Amelia Griffith died at her home Sunday April 16, 1922, after an illness that extended over several weeks, at the age of 72 years, 10 months and 18 days. She was the daughter of Anthony and Mary Ann Reible, and was born near Belford, France, May 28, 1849. She came to America with her parents in 1853. Her girlhood was spent near Mayville, Wis., where she was married to Leonard Griffith May 12, 1866. They remained in Dodge Co. until 1869, then with one child, Effie, they came to Clark County, locating on a tract of 120 acres of land in Sherman township, where they have since lived and where they developed the wilderness into a beautiful farm with true pioneer spirit.

Mrs. Griffith was always identified with every movement for the social and religious betterment of the community. She frequently had Sunday school for the neighborhood in her own home in the early days. She joined the Methodist Episcopal Church at Loyal at an early date and was a strong supporter of the work until after the present building was completed. As the country developed, a Presbyterian Church was built near her home at Veefkind, to which she transferred her membership. Till she did However, she remained a member of the W. C. T. U. and the Woman's Foreign Missionary Society at Loyal.

She was emphatically a homemaker and much loved by her family and friends, and will be sadly missed in the community where she spent most of her life. Hers was a busy and useful life and it can be truthfully said of her that the world is better for her having lived.

She leaves to mourn her loss three sons, Leonard Jr., and James of Loyal, Roy of Brentwood, Cal. and two daughters, Mrs. Amelia Churchill, Sawtelle, Calif. And Mrs. Alice Bachhuber of Mayville, Wis. One daughter, Mrs. Effie Teach, died 30 years ago.

The funeral services were held at the Loyal M. E. Church on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. J. H. Chatterson officiating. She was laid to rest in the Loyal Cemetery beside her husband.

There was a profusion of beautiful flowers, mutely bespeaking the esteem in which the deceased was held.
