Paulus, Ellen (4 JUL 1848 - 1 NOV 1924)

Mrs. Ellen Paulus, formerly a well known resident of this city (Neillsville, Clark County, Wis.), died Nov. 1, 1924, at the home of her older son, Edward, at Glenwood, Wis. The cause of her death was a cancerous tumor of the bronchial tract.

Mrs. Paulus, whose maiden name was Ellen Haley, was born at Worcester, Mass., July 4, 1848. The parents, Thomas Haley and Mary Haley, came to Dodge Co., Wis., in 1852, where the deceased grew to young womanhood, and was married to Edgar Higgins in 1867. They came to Clark County in the summer of 1868 and homesteaded 120 acres in the town of Levis. Edgar Higgins died in 1880, and in 1887 she married the late John Paulus, who died 22 years ago.

Old settlers will remember her as the landlady of the old O'Neill House, which they conducted for 25 years. During the years that Mrs. Paulus lived here, she made many friends, not only in and around Neillsville, but also with the traveling public, who came to know of the kindly hospitality that always met them as guests at the O'Neill House.

The deceased leaves to mourn her death, two sons, Edward and Daniel; two sisters, Bridget Daly of St. Paul, and Mary McCann of Rice Lake; also one grandson and one granddaughter.

The remains were brought to Neillsville for burial in the family lot, the two sons being in attendance. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon from Lowe's Undertaking parlors, Rev. G. W. Longenecker officiating.

While here attending his mother's funeral, Edward Higgins received a telegram telling him of the death of the wife of his son Morris.
