Elston, J. G. (? - 10 SEP 1927)

Again this community was suddenly shocked Saturday evening about 5 o'clock when J. G. Elston, the new proprietor of the Cash Hardware, fell dead in the store. He was standing alone at the time when the summons came, Mr. A. J. Petersen having been talking to him a few moments before and had gone to the back part of the store. Mr. F. W. Kluhsman came into the store to see Mr. Petersen and spoke to Mr. Elston as he passed by, and a minute or two after Mr. Petersen and Mrs. Kluhsman heard Mr. Elston fall on the floor. They hastened to his side, and hoping to revive him, at once called in Dr. Housely and Dr. Thompson, but it was found that Mr. Elston had passed away. He had told Mr. Petersen at noon that he did not feel just right and complained of a pain in his stomach, and the night previous he had not slept well, but apparently he was in good health. The physicians stated that his death was due to cerebral hemorrhage or apoplexy.

The body was taken to Lowe's undertaking rooms and Mrs. Elston was notified of the death at their home in La Crosse. She and her grown-up daughter and a near neighbor, left for Neillsville, Clark County at once, a La Crosse undertaker also coming up and the remains taken back Sunday. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at the First M. E. Church in La Crosse.

Mr. Elston was apparently a man in the early fifties. Little is known of his life history here, except that he had worked for the Summit Stove co. of La Crosse for 20 years and when they moved their business elsewhere he became a traveling salesman. Wishing to settle down to a home business, he bought the Cash Hardware Co. stock and took possession Sept. 1, Mr. Petersen remaining in the store to help him for a time. He made a very favorable impression on all who met him and it was felt generally that he would be a most desirable addition to the citizenship of Neillsville. He was a member of the Methodist Church and of the Masonic Lodge.
