Obit: Goebel, Joseph ( 1839 -1926)
Surnames: Goebel, Lustig, Boardman, Blakeslee, Dudei, Deutsch, Lutz, Reiff --Source: Neillsville Press (Neillsville, Clark County, Wis.) Thursday, 01/14/1926 Goebel, Joseph (12 Oct. 1839 - 10 Jan. 1926) Joseph Goebel, one of the old residents of the town of Grant, passed away at his home in that town Sunday, January 10, is his eighty-sixth year. He was born at Bresche, Silesia, Germany, October 12, 1839, grew to manhood there and emigrated to America in 1866, coming directly to Clark County. He came on foot to Neillsville from Sparta, then the nearest railroad point. During his first seven years here he worked in Neillsville -- part of the time for Mr. Blakeslee in the old grist mill and for Sam Boardman. It is an interesting fact that the large elms around the old Boardman residence, of late years used as a cigar factory, were planted by Mr. Goebel in 1869. He bought the present homestead in the town of Grant in 1870. On October 25, 1873, he was married to Anna Lustig and they went to housekeeping soon thereafter on the land in Grant, which they developed into a fine farm, and which remained their home the rest of their lives. His wife preceded him in death April 12, 1922. Mr. Goebel was a man of quiet, industrious, thrifty habits, evein in his advancing years and when his youthful strength had gone, he liked to busy himself with something useful about the home. He did well his part in building and maintaining a home for his family and was in every way an excellent citizen. He is survived by five children: John Goebel of Lynn; Mrs. Anna Dudei of Grant; Paul on the home farm; Bertha, Mrs. Gus. Deutsch, of Neillsville and Mrs. Clara Lutz of Milwaukee. He leaves also 14 grandchildren. The funeral is held this Wednesday afternoon at Rev. Reiff’s church in the town of Grant. |
