Acheson, John G. (13 FEB 1872 - 3 AUG 1928)

John G. Acheson, chairman of Weston, Clark County, Wis., died at Mercy Hospital, Oshkosh, Friday morning, Aug. 3, 1928. He had been in poor health for several months and went to the hospital on July 26 for examination. An operation was deemed advisable, and on July 30 he underwent the operation which seemed at first to be successful, but complications set in on Thursday and he passed away the next morning.

John G. Acheson was born in the state of New York Feb. 13, 1872. He came to Wisconsin with his parents when a small boy, the family settling in Outagamie Co. In 1904 he was married to Miss Rebecca McElvoy, who survives him. They moved to Chippewa Co. in 1909 and purchased a farm there, remaining in Chippewa Co. ten years. In 1919 they sold out and bought a farm in the town of Weston on Highway 73 north of Neillsville and have made their home there ever since.

While living in Chippewa Co. Mr. Acheson took an interest in public affairs, and served his town as assessor for two years and as treasurer for four years. A few years after moving here he was elected chairman of Weston, serving in that capacity, also clerk of his school district for about five years, and for nearly a year past has been a member of the Clark County Highway Committee.

The death of Mr. Acheson is a great bereavement to his family, and a great loss to this community and the entire county. He was a man of keen intelligence, analyzing readily problems that came before him, and his fairness, his unswerving honesty of purpose and his untiring devotion to duty, won for him the admiration and respect of all who came in contact with him. Few men have come into this community and in so short a time established a place in public confidence and esteem as did Mr. Acheson. He was a progressive farmer, a good man in his home and in every way an excellent citizen. He leaves his wife and four children: Russell and Donald, young men, Hazel aged 18 and Nita 14, all at home. A little daughter, Fern, died in infancy.

Deceased leaves also, four brothers: James of Appleton; Richard of Neenah, Robert of Chehalis, Wash.; Evans of Stockton, Calif.; and one sister, Katherine, Mrs. Henderson of Wella Wella, Wash.

The funeral was held Monday afternoon, brief services being held at the home and regular services at the Congregational Church in Neillsville, Rev. G. W. Longenecker officiating. The Neillsville Lodge Independent Order of Odd Fellows, of which deceased was an honored member, attended by a body and took part in the ceremonies.

All of the offices at the Courthouse were closed during the funeral.
