John G. & Addie (Ketchpaw) Memhard

Greenwood, Clark County, WI

The former Addie Ketchpaw was born Sept. 1, 1878, at Elkhorn, the daughter of Byron F. and Ella Roach Ketchpaw.  She received her education in Elkhorn schools. The family moved to Greenwood in 1897. She was employed here as the first cashier in the Big Store, now the Farmers Store. Several years later she went to Chicago, Ill., where she was employed by a wholesale credit company.  She was married to John Memhard of Chicago, Jan. 26, 1911. Soon after their marriage they went to Twin Falls, Idaho, where they purchased a store. A few years later they returned to Chicago and engaged in business there. After some time they sold their business and returned to Idaho and were in the dry goods business at Bancroft, Idaho, until Mr. Memhard's death in March 1939.  In 1939 she came to Greenwood to make her home with her parents and sister, Mrs. Beatrice Clayton.  John Memhard was born at Madison on June 19, 1851. He was the second oldest of 10 children, eight boys and two girls, five of whom are living. His parents came from Heidelberg, Germany, in 1847.  For 35 years he was employed by the Carson Pierre Scott Company of Chicago, and in 1899 came to Greenwood, where he was manager of the Big Store. After leaving Greenwood he was employed by the Salt Lake Credit Company of Utah for a number of years.  He operated and owned a store at Twin Falls, Idaho, and at Bancroft, Idaho.

Research

We acknowledge a pleasant ride Wednesday after John Memhard’s driving horse. We must confess, however, that we feared two fears: one was that we might have to dig ourselves out of some snow pile from turning corners too quickly, and the other was that Marshal Hogue might get hold of us and run us in for fast driving in city limits. The census information you show is for a different John Memhard, born in Wisconsin in June 1849 to Frederick and Frederica Memhard from Württemberg, Germany. If you read the name of the SPOUSE, you will see that in both cases it is Agnes, not Addie. Agnes Clow was born in Nova Scotia on 12/31/1846. Your John died in 1935 while my John died around 1915 in Oklahoma and his wife Agnes died on 07/10/1923 and is buried in Erick Cemetery, Beckham County, Oklahoma. Also, you say that John Memhard moved to Greenwood in 1899 but the 1900 census says that he resided in Chicago with his wife and two children.
