Mead, William (17 SEP 1840 - 10 APR 1924)

William Mead, one of the oldest residents of Clark County, Wis., died suddenly on Thursday morning, April 10th, 1924 at his home in this village. Several months ago he suffered a paralytic stroke, from which he recovered. On Thursday last he was about to step through the door of the garage when he dropped and died instantly. His wife passed away on March 25, 1920.

William Mead was born Sept. 17, 1840 near Poughkeepsie, Duchess Co., N.Y. the son of Van Rennsler and Margaret (Marshall) Mead, natives of New York. He came to Wisconsin with his folks in the year 1845, and settled near Watertown, Wis. He was united in marriage to Mary Madagm at Watertown, N.Y., Jan. 2, 1865. Five children were born of this union, William (deceased), Fred, now residing near Sturgeon Valley, Saskatchewan, Byron of Wenatchee, Wash., Hixon at Thorp, and Laura, Mrs. H. C. Tiedemann, at Thorp, one brother, Daniel Mead of Milwaukee, and one sister, Mrs. Patrick Sheehan of Mesa, Ariz., also survive.

Mr. Mead moved to Clark County in the fall of the year of 1868, settling on a homestead 6 miles north of Greenwood, Wis., where he resided until the year 1912, when he sold out and moved to Withee, Clark County, where he lived until 1918, when he again sold and moved to Thorp.

Deceased served as assessor in 1869 in this portion of the county before the several townships were organized hereabouts.

The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon last from the residence, Rev. J. H. Benson officiating, interment following in the Thorp Village Cemetery.
