MOLLY IN THE WELL          

It was in early June of 1954 that Molly had the misfortune of falling into an abandoned well on the farm of Albert and Luella Mohr in south Pine Valley Twp.  My mother, Luella, 7 months pregnant was up early at about 4 a.m. to tend to the youngest Paul, age 13 months.   At that time she heard the cows out walking on the yard “apparently looking for greener grass”, as they had broken out of the barnyard fence.   First she turned on the yard light, but the bulb burned out, so she proceeded to go out to investigate.  She and my father, Albert, heard some splashing noise, thus drawing their attention to the old abandoned dug well between the house and the barn.  (A new well had been drilled and it was being used for all their water supply.)  

The old wooden planks that covered the old dug well, had rotted and when Molly stepped on the planks they gave way under her body weight causing the planks and cow to fall into the well.  Now they had a problem of ‘how do we get Molly out of the well?’  So a call was made to the ZILK’s Garage, located at the corner of Hewett and Division streets in Neillsville, to bring out their larger wrecker truck to help lift the cow out of the well.  Then with the help of the wrecker and friends assisting, Molly was raised up out of the well.  

The picture herewith shows Luella and Albert pulling at the cow’s head and two friends helping (as the ropes had slipped), they got Molly on her feet again on the solid ground.  Molly only sustained some bruises and scrapes and joined the cowherd again.
