Surnames: MONTAG FENSKE MUIR STEFFEN BEIL Source: Town of Fremont History - 1973 Montag Family, Herman Mrs. Herman Montag, nee Anna Fenske, was born in the town of Fremont, Clark County, Wis. on March 17, 1889. She is the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Albert Fenske. They came to the Town of Fremont from Germany in 1882. Her deceased brothers were Charles and Richard, both residents of the Town of Fremont. Another brother, Gustave, was a Menasha resident. He was the father of Herbert Fenske, the Town Clerk at this time. Herman Montag was born in Nasonville, Wis. in 1886, later moving to the Town of Lynn, Clark County with his parents. In 1900 he came to Chili to work in a general store owned and operated by L. A. Reichert. He worked for Mr. Reichert for 22 years, then the business was sold to John Michels and Adolph Labelle. Mr. Montag worked for them a short time, made several moves, but after a few years bought Mr. Labelle's share, was in business with Michels for quite a few years, then took over the business alone for a few years before he sold. He passed away in 1954. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Chili and served as its Secretary for 28 years. He was also custodian for many years. He also served on the Chili School Board. Mrs. Montag and her three children are members of Christ Lutheran Church. She is a charter member of its Ladies Aid Society and served as its first president. Her children are Hilda Beil, Victor, married to Live Muir, and Geneva, Mrs. Elmer Steffen, all living in the Town of Fremont. She has three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren |
