Habhegger, Godfrey (9 JUL 1838 - 23 JUN 1926)

Godfrey Habhegger was born at Huttwyl, Switzerland July 9th, 1838, died at Loyal, Clark County, Wis., June 23rd, 1926, aged 87 years, 11 months and 14 days.

When 15 years of age, he, with his parents, 4 brothers and 6 sisters came to America, after a two month voyage on the Atlantic in a sailing vessel.

They located first at Milwaukee then at Watertown, Wis.

He worked as a farm hand in Iowa and Missouri, and when 22 years of age, went to California, going by way of New York, then by steamer to the Isthmus of Panama, crossing here by rail, and again by steamer to San Francisco. After 8 years of mining and railroad work, he returned to Watertown, making the trip via the then newly built Union Pacific Railroad.

On Sept. 19, 1874 he was united in marriage with Anna Guett of Kansas City, Mo., and after a few years took up a homestead near Fulda, Minn., remaining there for 12 years, when, his wife, having died, he and four children returned to Watertown, farming there for 16 years, and then with two sons and one daughter, came to the farm near Loyal where he spent the remaining years.

He is survived by four children, Mrs. Theodore Lehmann of Watertown, Wis. and Julia, William and John of Loyal, five grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Caroline Berens and Mrs. Barbara Ricker, both of Milwaukee.

Funeral services were conducted at the home, Rev. Mallory of Granton officiating. The remains were laid at rest in the Loyal Cemetery.

W. Hogle, Mrs. M. J. Murray and son William of Wrenshall, Minn.
