Bertha Schoettler, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Schoettler, was born in Germany on the 29th day of July, 1880, and departed this life at her late home in Loyal, Wisconsin on the 4th day, of June 1928, at the age of 47 years, 11 months and 7 days.

October 22, 1902, she was united in marriage to Fred Degen. To this union five children were born, all of whom are living and as follows: William, Margaret and Doris, at home; Mrs. Harold Hills, Loyal, Wisconsin, and Mrs. Harry Brunt, Chicago, Ill. Who together with the husband, Fred Degen, survive. Among other surviving relatives is her mother, Mrs. Albert Schoettler, who for sometime has been at the bedside of her daughter, in full strength of a Mother’s love and with every effort possible for human hands to make, to soften the pillow and ease the suffering of her offspring. Over and above the foregoing near relatives, she is survived by one grandson, Eldon Hills, one brother, Erwin Schoettler, of the Town of Beaver, Wisconsin, two sisters, Mrs. Louis Bartline, Shawno, Wisconsin, and Mrs. W. Vollrath, Greenwood, Wisconsin.

Mrs. Degen has been a long and patient sufferer; having been confined to the home for about four years. During all of her sickness and suffering, she maintained a patient and loving disposition, cheerful and hopeful, almost to the last moment. Monday evening she seemed to drop in a peaceful sleep from which she never awoke and at 11:50 and without a struggle her spirit winged its way across the Great Divide.

She was a firm believer in the Christian religion and was received into membership in the Loyal M. E. Church, by the present pastor in January of the present year, and has received the Communion Service at two different times since her reception into membership.

Nobly thy course is run---

In thy warfare for heav’n,

Comes the sacred story,

For thou like the summer sun,

Shrouded in glory.

Funeral services were conducted from the home Thursday June 7, 1928 at 1:30 p.m. and from the Methodist Church at 2 p.m. the Rev. G. C. Wadding officiating. Interment was made in the Pine Grove Cemetery.
