Naumann, Caroline J. (1 OCT 1841 - 15 APR 1924)

Mrs. Caroline Naumann, an old resident of Dorchester, Clark County country, died at her home here in the village at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 15th, 1924, at the age of 81 years, 6 months and 14 days. Kidney trouble and old age are given as the cause of death and she was confined to her bed for the past two weeks.

Funeral services will be held this (Friday) afternoon at 2:30 from the St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church, Rev. V. M. Keiper officiating. Her six grandsons, Alfred and Albert Schiebe, John Bucher, Willie and Earl Maritzke and Arthur Naumann, acting as pallbearers. Interment is to be made in the cemetery south of the village.

Caroline Johanna Knopp was born on Oct. 1st, 1841 at Luebgust, Kreis, Nustetin, Pomeraine, Germany, where she grew to womanhood and on Oct. 26th, 1866 was married to Johan Maritzke, also a native of that country. In May 1873 they landed in the United States and made their home at Milwaukee until in Oct. 1877 when they came to Dorchester country and took up a homestead three miles east of Dorchester. Mr. Maritzke died the following year in November. Seven children were born of this union, three sons, August, Julius and Fred, who survive her, and four daughters, all deceased. On July 18th, 1880 she was united in marriage to Rudolph Naumann, a Civil War veteran, at Colby. They continued living on the farm and on Nov. 3rd, 1914 Mr. Naumann answered the last roll call. Of this union three children were born, Mrs. Clara Bucher, Westboro, Henry Naumann, town of Mayville, and Mrs. Caroline Showers, Bradley, all of whom are here for the obsequies. Besides her six children, She is survived by twenty grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Matilda Geisse of Milwaukee.

She was one of the Dorchester pioneers whom we honor so and who are quietly slipping away one by one to the reward they so richly deserve. A loving mother and a good neighbor, that's what makes this world worth living in, fine mother and friendly neighbors.

May those who are left take comfort in the thought that the world is better for her having lived in it.
