Obit: Calkins, Alonzo J. (1853 - 1924)
Surnames: CALKINS CRAIG LALONDE SEVERANCE Source: WEEKLY CLARION (Dorchester, Clark Co., WI) 12/05/1924 Calkins, Alonzo J. (7 DEC 1853 - 27 NOV 1924) Alonzo J. Calkins died at his home in Abbotsford Thursday, Nov. 27, 1924, and the funeral was held on Monday, the Masonic Order, of which he was a member, conducting their beautiful impressive service and he was laid to rest to await the dawn when we shall meet those we have loved and lost. The pallbearers were A. W. Notbohm, T. E. Emling, George Ouimette, Theo. Cholewinski, H. H. Fiebig and W. Nieburh. Alonzo James Calkins was born at Melrose, Jackson Co., Wis., Dec. 7, 1853 and was 70 years, 11 months and 20 days at time of death. When he was twelve years of age he moved with his parents to Des Moines, Iowa, and six years later to Bloomer, Wis. May 25, 1873, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Craig. Two children were born to them, Herbert U. and Charlotte G., now Mrs. O. J. LaLonde. From Bloomer he moved with his wife and family to Boyd, Wis., and it was there he began his work with the Wis. Central R. R. and twenty-two years ago them moved to Abbotsford, where he has since worked for the Soo. He worked on the Soo and its predecessor for thirty-three years and we think this alone tells of his sterling worth and fine manly qualities. Dec. 7, 1921 he was placed on the pension roll of the Soo Line R. R. Co. He was of a quiet, unassuming character, well liked by those who knew him best. Those who are left to mourn his loss are his wife, Mrs. A. J. Calkins, son, Herbert, his daughter, Mrs. LaLonde of Milwaukee, his grandson, Harold E. Severance, and great-granddaughter, Mary Beth Severance, also of Milwaukee, two brothers and two sisters. Those from out of town who attended the funeral were all of the immediate relatives, Mr. Jerome Calkins of Stanley and Mr. and Mrs. Albert Phipps of Chippewa Falls. The Clarion joins with Abbotsford friends in mourning the loss of this fine old man. |
