History: Clark County (25 Aug. 1932)
Source: Neillsville Press (Neillsville, Clark County, Wis.) 25 Aug. 1932 NEW HISTORY OF WESTERN WISCONSIN Clark County is a part of that parcel or portion of Western Wisconsin long referred to by historians as the “Carver Grant”. Capt. Jonathon Carver explored this region as early as 1766-67 and wrote glowing accounts of the country to his friends in England, and in the colonies along the Atlantic sea board. Carver claimed that the Indians deeded him an immense tract of land in Wisconsin, virtually the northwestern portion of the state. In comparatively late years, people have been duped by deeds pretending to convey property under the Carve Grant. Although Congress refused confirmation of the grant on three separate occasions, one in 1806, one in 1823 and one in 1825. There is now being prepared a new and complete history of West Central Wisconsin by John G. Gregory, editor and historian of Milwaukee and Madison and the Hon. T. J. Cunningham of Chippewa Falls, former Secretary of State, assisted by a corps of associate editors. The local members of the Advisory Board is George E. Crothers of the Neillsville Press. The history, which is to appear four volumes, will be fully illustrated, and as time is needed for research and writing, will not appear for some time. D. J. O’Brien, who has assisted the editors on other Wisconsin histories, will be in Clark County some little time interviewing pioneer families, public officials, business and professional men and others interested in the history of this region. The Press is co-operating in loaning the publishers any cuts, pictures or historical material it may has in its files. |
