Response--History: Prisoner of War Camps (1945)
It was an interesting article on the POWs. There also was a camp here in Bismarck, ND at Ft. Lincoln which is now the grounds for the UTTC college run by native americans. I haven't been able to find the feature that covered the war internees here, but I did find this link with stories of German internees that had been held both here and in Wisconsin. http://www.traces.org/timeline.aftermath.html My father recieved his military discharge at one of the Wisconsin internment camps, Camp McCoy. As with some of the Wisconsin prisoners, some of those held here in Bismarck, ND, remained here after the war and settled in the state. This area of NDak has quite a high percentage of the population with German and German-Russian backgrounds. Many of their families were brought west with the railroads in the 1880-1900 years. One still hears German being spoken in a lot of the small towns of south central and southwest ND. Pat |
