Seif, Mr./Mrs. John (58th - 16 JAN 1961)

No celebration is planned, however, today, Mr. And Mrs. John Seif, 305 W. First St., Neillsville, Clark County, Wis., are looking back on 58 years of married life. The couple lives in the rear apartment of their two-story frame house, and the front portion is rented to a niece, Mrs. Gerelda Larson, and her daughter, Deon.

Mr. And Mrs. Seif were married in Neillsville by Justice of the Peace Arthur Dudley on Jan. 16, 1903, when much of the Neillsville area was first developing into a farming community.

They rented the home farm in the town of Seif for seven years, then purchased the farm from his father. That was their home until 14 years ago when they sold the farm to their youngest son, Robert, and then purchased their present home.

John Seif, the son of Fred and Mary Seif, was born Oct. 15, 1878, in the town of Sherwood, Clark County. However, the family moved to the town of Seif about four years later where his father cleared land and began farming. He was educated in the Worchel School.

Before his marriage Mr. Seif worked in the woods in the winter, and in sawmills during the summer. He recalls driving logs down Black River from the Medford area to Hatfield. This was done on foot and by boat. He talks of frequent times when for many days the crew was on the water, driving the logs toward La Crosse, and other sawmill locations where they were made into lumber.

The town of Seif, in which the family lived, was named after his father, Fred, who became the first chairman of that township. Later, John Seif was chairman of that township for some 1 years, and he also served as assessor of the town of Seif, school treasurer for 12 years, a member of the Clark County school committee, was a town board member, and was also president of the local Co-op Shipping Association.

Mr. Seif enjoys good health, and his hobbies, especially in earlier years, were hunting and fishing.

Mrs. Seif, the former Della Jacklin, was born July 28, 1882, in the town of Weston, Clark County, and was educated in that township. She did housework before her marriage, earning as much as $1.50 a week in wages. She had always enjoyed doing fancywork, but because of failing health in recent years, she has had to hold her activities to a minimum.

Both Mr. And Mrs. Seif are members of the United Church of Christ in Neillsville.

They have three children, Mrs. Lloyd (Viola) Nelson, Milaca, Minn.; Harley Seif, Milwaukee; and Robert, who operates the home farm in the town of Seif. They also have seven grandchildren.
