Buehrens, Stella (7 Feb. 1911 – 4 April 2005)

Stella Ziem Buehrens, 94, a longtime resident of Winfield, died April 4, 2005. Having transported a large fortune to heaven in the form of good deeds, kindness and acts of charity, she has gone there to enjoy it.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service. David Buehrens will officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the First United Methodist Church, Youthville Methodist Children¹s Fund in Newton or Hospice Care of Kansas.

Mrs. Buehrens was the daughter of Charles and Ida Ziem. She was born at her parents¹ farm near Larson, Wis., on Feb. 7, 1911. She later moved with her family to Neenah, Wis., where she graduated from Neenah High School. After working four years for the telephone company, she attended Carthage College in Carthage, Ill. In 1935 she married Herbert F. Buehrens of Dorchester, Wis. For many years, she did office work for her husband¹s sheet metal business in Dorchester while raising their small children. The family moved to Winfield in 1951. After her children were grown, Mrs. Buehrens worked for eight years as a psychiatric aide at the Winfield State Hospital & Training Center. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where she often taught the Mizpah Sunday school class. She was involved with Church Women United, Project Concern (now Recycling Ministries) and the Grace Raymond Circle of the church. She often attended the church¹s senior adult luncheons.

She belonged to and baked cookies for the William Newton Hospital Auxiliary. For many years, Mrs. Buehrens collected, repaired and sent clothing to Church World Service, which then sent them to needy families overseas. She also collected, repaired and mailed Bibles to the Bible League, which shipped them to Christians in third world countries.

During her retirement years, she traveled to Israel with a mission group she had long supported. She visited Norway to meet her extended Norwegian family with her daughter Grace after researching, writing and typing an extensive family genealogy. She loved to correspond with family and friends, read and study Bible history, archaeology and prophecy. She also enjoyed journaling, gardening, cooking and baking.

Mrs. Buehrens is survived by her five children, Ruth Cascone, Tacoma, Wash., David Buehrens, Staten Island, N.Y., Dr. Wesley G. Bradford, Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., Dr. Grace Ziem, Emmitsburg, Md., and Carol Simon, San Diego, Calif. She also leaves behind six grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, and great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
