Surname: Hiles, Robrantz, Longenecker, Hughes, Huckstead, Ure, Selves, Vine, Suckow, West, Braatz, Gerhardt, Kurth, Handt, Gerhardt, Eisentraut, Brushberg, Vvhnalek, Kania Source: Neillsville Press (Neillsville, Clark County, Wis.) 15 Nov. 1934 Hiles, Charles (1 Jan. 1871 – 6 Nov. 1934) Charles Hiles, a prominent farmer of the town of Grant, was born in Lincolnshire, England, Jan. 1, 1871. His parents died there when he was a small boy. In 1893 he came to America and lived first at Richmond, ??. In 1909 he came to Clark County, setting at Christie. In 1918 he moved to the town of Grant. Ten years later he moved to his home on Pleasant Ridge. On May 3, 1898 he was married to Pauline Robrantz, who survives him. He leaves also four children, Anne, Robert, William and Rachel, all residing in the town of Grant, with the exception of Miss Rachel, who lives at Milwaukee; also 4 grandchildren. Mr. Hiles passed away at the Neillsville Hospital Nov. 6, 1934, a few days after an emergency operation. The funeral was held in Pleasant Ridge Church, Nov. 9th, Rev. G. W. Longenecker officiating and was largely attended by friends and neighbors. Burial took place in Windfall Cemetery, near Granton. Mr. Hiles was a man of keen intelligence, an industrious and successful farmer. His sympathies were always enlisted in behalf of toilers and especially the struggling people on the farms. He was fearless and outspoken in presenting his views, and was a forceful public speaker. For several years he was a director of the Lynn Mutual Insurance Companies, a position he held at the time of his death. He will be greatly missed in this community. The honorary pallbearers were: James Hughes, Arlo Huckstead, Geo. Ure, Richard Selves, Fred Vine and Rudolph Suckow. Active pallbearers were George West, Geo. Vine, Carl Braatz, Willard Gerhardt, William Kurth and Herman Handt. Four young men from Mr. Hiles’ Sunday school class were chosen as flower boys: Glen Gerhardt, Donald Hughes, Erwin Vine and Carl Eisentraut. Those who attend the funeral from away were: Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Burshberg of Milwaukee; Mr. and Mrs. Otto Vvhnalek and Mr. Frank Kania of Chicago.
