Peterson, Oliva A. (30 JAN 1886 – 17 OCT 1908)

Mrs. Ed Peterson died Saturday at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ole Johnson. She had returned with her mother, her husband and son from North Dakota only the week before her death.

She had been sick nearly all summer, her trouble at first being appendicitis. She was operated on for this in August at Northwood, N.D. She was soon taken with consumption of the stomach, which gained a strong hold in her system owing to her weakened condition. Upon her return the consumption went to her lungs and she failed rapidly. On Thursday before her death she felt strong enough to be out and drove to town with her husband. She enjoyed the ride very much; she was pleased to get sight of the school house where she had spent many happy hours and to meet some of her old friends, among them Rev. Hendren, who performed the ceremony at their marriage three years ago.

The next day she became weaker and died Saturday nigh at ten o’clock, death coming quietly and without pain.

The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon in the Methodist Church, Rev. W.T. Hendren having charge of the services, and assisted by Rev. Norton. The remains were buried in the Greenwood Cemetery. Mrs. John Charles, Miss Olive Hanson and Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Jenson of Neillsville and Mrs. Isadore Jolivette of La Crosse were present at the funeral.

Deceased, known among her friends as Mollie Johnson, was born on the home place east of the city in the town of Eaton, Jan. 30, 1886, christened Oliva Amalie Johnson. She was 22 years, 8 months and 17 days old when she died.

She was one of a family of eleven children, seven of which are living, four having died in infancy or early childhood. She grew up on the home farm and received her schooling in the local schools, graduating from the high school with the class of 1904. She taught school one year at the Mound School north of Christie.

She was married on April 6th, 1905 to Edward Peterson and went with him to Angle, N.D., where they settled on a claim. One child, Chester Edward, was born to them Feb. 1st, 1906.

Mrs. Peterson leaves besides her husband and son, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ole Johnson, three sisters, Mrs. Jerry Vine and Mrs. John Johnson, who live northeast of town, and Dollie, living at home, four brothers, Oscar, Arthur, Elmer and Leo.

The departed leaves the record of a pure and gentle Christian life and although the loss of a daughter and sitter, a wife and mother, and a friend, is grievous to those she leaves behind, it is better as it has been ordered. The apostle’s desire for the Thessalonians was “That ye sorrow not, even as the rest who have no hope, for if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also that are fallen asleep in Jesus will God bring with him.”
